My Imaginary Well-Dressed Toddler Daughter

this made me cry-laugh. and also made me wish that I was as stylish as these kids are.

When Quinoa wants volume, she doesn't just tease her hair, she relentlessly bullies it.

Quinoa always keeps a spare "urban outfit" in my purse in the event we're going to be around a lot of chain link fencing.

Everything went fine at Quinoa's playdate with Booker until she realized that when he said he loved vinyl, he meant jackets not vintage records.

When Quinoa needs to go to the bathroom, she really doesn't want to hear any more about Humboldt's designer Legos.

One time when Quinoa and I got separated in a busy train station, she thankfully remembered our safety training: stay in one place, look spectacular, and don't talk to poor people.

Mary had a little lamb, but Quinoa has a better little lamb. And better hair accessories. And more friends. Who's calling the shots now, huh, Mary?

Sometimes when Quinoa is particularly well-dressed, she begins to levitate.

Know what really gets Quinoa down in the dumps? Pleather.

Quinoa loves her friend Hugo, but wishes that he didn't try quite so hard.

I sent Quinoa to a sleepover one night and she returned the next day wearing her pillowcase as a modern frock. Silly girl!

When I asked Quinoa what was on the horizon, she stared at it and said, "Chambray."

I told Quinoa her shoes were like art, so she hung them on the wall.

Quinoa and her BFF Chevron were so excited to attend their first PETA rally. They worked on their coordinating outfits for weeks.

Quinoa had no use for Hampton and Dolce once she realized they had just been using her for her lollipops.

When out in public with Quinoa, I can hear the sound of hipster ovaries swelling with want.

yuna zarai

Back in the day when I used to look at lookbook.nu posts for street trends, I happened to end up on Yuna Zarai's lookbook account. Which is Totally Amaze, you guys. I love her style, maynnn, I aspire.* She also happens to co-own an online women's boutique called IAMJETFUEL which has some kayoot pieces. Her tumblr is/was great too, although it isn't open to the public anymore coz of drama.  BESIDES ALL OF THAT AWESOME THINGS, SHE. CAN. SING. yes.

I love her music. It's calming, makes my heart smile and brings me to tears sometimes when I'm all emo and like, she's writing parts of my life, you know?

Here are some of my favourites:

Decorate

So you decided to see me out of the blue
see me out of the blue
I’m all black and white inside
monotonous from left to right
I decorate my house with things you love
just in case you show up.

Live Your Life
(Produced by Pharrell Willams, y'all)
All my life
I've been looking for something amazing
It's almost like I've been stargazing
The sky is right above me

We

Were meant for something bigger than this
Don't ever try to dismiss
Yourself, cause you don't have to

Island
Open up your heart to me
We'll explore the seven seas
Sail away and find your dreams
And if you drown I'll help keep your head up
And if you drown I'll help keep your head up
to breath

Deeper Conversation
 Is your favourite colour blue?
and do you always tell the truth?
Do you believe in outerspace?
And I'm learning you

Blue Sands
Oh blue sands, will I ever get to marry my handsome friend?
Oh blue sands, can you make them understand?

Oh blue sands, I don't want to go up there and pretend
I'm okay

Lullabies
Like lullabies you are,
Forever in my mind.
I see you in all,
The pieces in my life.
Though you weren't mine,
you were my first love.

Random Awesome
(This is my favourite favourite)
No I don't know what is up with me
I laugh too much recently
No, They don't know much about us
When we're exchanging glances
They'll figure out one day, what happened on your 24th birthday

Here are three cover songs she did:

Kanye West's Paranoid

Nirvana's Come As You Are

And Frank Ocean's Thinkin Bout You

Please check her out :)

PS. she's been nominated in the MTV EMA 2012 awards so please vote for her here: http://asia.mtvema.com/artists/yuna

how to avoid looking like everyone else this Eid [in Cape Town]

Firstly, it's like 3am and I'm doing this post.
Secondly, there are only ten more days till Eid. Can you believe it?? TEN. MORE. DAYS.  Sadly, I'm at that age where time is flying by so unbelievably fast and I keep saying "time is flying by so fast! I can't believe it!" to myself. Almost the end of the year. Almost time to graduate. Almost my birthday.  Ack. I'm typing about myself as if this blog is about me - LOL.

So. If you aren't Capetonian and you haven't been here recently, you might not understand this post. Like I care. EVERYBODY in Cape Town will know what I mean though. Well, all Muslims in Cape Town will know what I mean. Capetonian Muslims are bandwagon jumpers. Oh, someone you know started surfing? I'll start surfing! Everyone I know should start surfing! Whoa, what are these pretty little cookies you're eating? They're so pretty! They're called macaroons*? So cute! Let me take pictures! Everyone I know should love macaroons now! Oh, your favourite colour is burgundy? I love burgundy! I'll dye my dog** cat burgundy! You should love burgundy! And you should love burgundy!*** Let's all be burgundy plz.
etc.

Yeah. On Eid, 90% of the Mozlems will be dressed similar. This is a problem (these days) because dear Capetonian Muslims are getting in on the hipsterrrr craze. Which means you absolutely cannot look or be like anyone else. Don't be mainstream, bro. I decided to be kind and made a little graphic to guide your retail choices.

Best way not to be mainstream? Wear an abaya/thawb. No pressure, easy and not as expensive.

Finally, I hope all y'all Muslims had a wonderful, fulfilling Ramadaan 2012 and that your Eid will be delightful. Peace, love and light :)

*macaRONS you asshole. it's French, not American. (why am I mad?)
**dogs are haraam.
***so! many! exclamations!

aztec-tically pleasing

so this trend is going to be HUGE in South Africa in a year or two. I didn't see it explode yet like it's doing overseas but SA is a *tiny* bit behind on trends. Not because they aren't available here but because people are slowwwww on the uptake. Please forgive me if any of the prints above are NOT Aztec. I did a Google image/pinterest search.

ANYWAY, I LOVE THESE KIND OF PRINTS. Last year my swimwear designs were inspired by Native Americans (Navajo specifically). Also, I come up with the worst trend titles.

the pros and cons of selling out as a {fashion student}

I finished an internship with a retail company today, and while I found the whole experience very informative and dare I say - FUN*, I began worrying about what I'd do next year.** So I made this list thingy***:

click for full resolution. if you want. i'm not telling you what to do, gawd.

of course, my other options are DO NOTHING, marry a very wealthy man I can bum off the rest of my life or continuing my studies by doing my BTech. I guess I'll leave that for another list thingy.

Also, if you're Muslim and you're reading this post - Ramadaan Kareem! :)

*also exhausting. going from waking up at 8 for college to 6.30 for work :/ being an adult is tiring!
**I graduate this year
***I got distracted while doing this & I was too lazy to finish it when I remembered what I was doing, so it is a bit incomplete.

cape town.

I might just be ever so slightly obsessed with capes these days.*
& how cute are these?:

I want to make something like that for myself and mom's store. I ALSO HAVE AN AWESOME IDEA FOR A PHOTOSHOOT NOW.**

*just a little bit.
**will share it soon soon :)

the birth of Moon

The title of this post leaves me slightly nauseous. Nevertheless, ladies and gentlemen, I give you...

MY LABEL'S LOGO! TADA!
I'm not 100% committed to this, though. It was created this afternoon because I was about to send off a design for a client when I realised my label name is not on the design sheet. I do like it, I really do, but I have commitment issues :'( So this may or may not stick. I think I'll make a few other logos and see which one sticks to me the most. For now, this will do.
