I watched The Great Gatsby yesterday. I wouldn't exactly call myself a fan of Baz Luhrmann BUT Romeo + Juliet is one of the few physical DVDs I own (and rewatch). That should count for something, right? I also really dig the soundtrack to this movie.
I thought it was amazing- the costumes, the acting, everything. Unlike most people on the internet, I LOVED the soundtrack. I was smiling throughout the film and the music definitely contributed to keeping my face looking like I'm on happy meds.
I've chosen Lana's Young & Beautiful (orchestral version) as song of the month. If you haven't watched the movie yet, please do so soon!
oh my glob - IT'S AUGUST! this year went by wayy too fast for my liking. Do you ever feel like you need a hyperbolic time chamber to get things done? I feel like that daily weekly. But I digress.* The song for August is a remix of the lovely Florence Welsh's Spectrum (Say My Name)!. You've probably heard it before me**, whatever. The awesome & goodlooking ( :) ) Calvin Harris does a brilliant remix of this song, I must've played it a million times the day I got it. Anyway, enough of me, here's the song:
Enjoy!
*I never get to use that sentence **I was told it's old last month.
One of my all time favourite bands, Metric, released their album last month. And what an awesome album it is! This is the only music I have on my phone right now, that's how good it is.* It's called Synthetica and continues in the same vein as Fantasies - you know, electronicy** sounding. That's the album I first heard of them and made me fall in l o v e with this band of amazingness*** :). I chose The Void as song of the month because that song was basically written about me. But each and every one of the songs on this album are worthy of obsessive repeats, you guys. Do it.
*all my files were erased from SD card and I was too lazy to put everything back on. ha. **totally a word. ***leave me alone.
You know how you have music on your PC that you never listen to? C'mon! You DID NOT listen to over 20000 songs ever, stop lying. Sigur Ros, sorry Sigur Rós, is part of my "music that I've never listened to but have on my PC". Okay, now I'm lying. I never had Sigur Rós on my PC. Except for this song that I'm going to make my song of the month. I admit, I have heard of Sigur Rós but never heard them. But this week, the band seem to pop up EVERYWHERE.* I took it as a sign that the universe would like me to listen to them. I always listen to the universe because the universe speaks only truth. Anyway. They weren't already in my vast music library so I wiki'd them. Read that Jónsi is the lead singer. "jon...si...I know that name!", is what I thought to myself. I searched Jónsi in my library and this track appeared:
Which is now my song of the month. Yes, it's a Tiesto, sorry Tiësto, song. No, I don't listen to any of his other songs.**
I find myself tripping on Jónsi's voice. It's beautiful. Jónsi is a guy. I don't know how to pronounce his name or band properly. I have listened to this song 50 times today. It feels like it's hugging me. I am in the process of getting Sigur Rós' other albums so that I become the BIGGEST FAN EVER.***
EDIT: I actually have Sigur Rós on my laptop already.
*tastekid, last.fm, twitter, Portlandia **total lie. but like, shut up? I like what I like. ***music snobs, you may hate me now.
May is almost over which means that WINTER IS COMING. Of course, most people in Cape Town think winter starts the minute the weather stops being super hot and sunshiney (April). Most people are idiots. It is known.*
This month I decided to go with two songs (again). One is by Fleet Foxes. It makes me quite happy.
Fleet Foxes - White Winter Hymnal
The next one is by Arcade Fire. This one doesn't make me feel happy...but it doesn't make me feel sad either. I can't quite explain.
Arcade Fire - Cold Wind
Both of these songs relate to the first paragraph. Can you guess how? I'm so subtle. Also, I'm aware how hipsterful this post is.
*I'm letting you all know that I totes watch Game of Thrones.
I decided to post another song of the month because, well, this is my blog and I can do whatever I want. I've been listening to this so much lately. It's not a song you'll play when other people are around. I just put in my earphones and play on repeat. Great for those melancholic moods.
It's called Untitled by Interpol, a band I first heard on 5fm when Barney Simon was around. I have him to thank for a lot of alt rock bands I listen to. So, Thanks Barney!
Also, maybe check out a really rad cover of Interpol by Azealia Banks.
So I've heard this song only like a million times on FTV during Paris Fashion Week this year and decided to post it 'coz, well, I really like it. So ya. It's a song by Friendly Fires, remixed by Airplane with lead vocals by indie band Au Rovoir Simone.
Enjoy!
ps. this post is very short and to the point. I am drugged on Allergex. Apologies if you don't like it.
I was watching TV the other day and I heard a song by the Generationals playing in an advertisement. I don't remember what that commercial was about but it did make me remember how much I liked this song, SO I decided to make it March's song of the month.
The song is called Ten-Twenty-Ten and I'm ashamed to admit that I first heard it in that MTV show "Awkward"*. STOP JUDGING ME. I really like it, this song makes me tap my toes**. I currently have it playing on repeat in my ears. It makes me happy :) BTW I have one more week of college then 3 weeks of vaykay, YAY! That makes me happy too. If you like chilled indie rock, do yourself a HUGE favour and listen to this duo's latest album Actor-Caster. Thank me later.
*NOTHING about this show is awkward. It's like when the stupid people on facebook update their status about how awkward their mundane lives/dumb actions are. Not awkward you guys. **The closest I'll ever get to dancing.
I've decided to start a new feature on my blog to help me remember to actually blog. Originally, it was going to be Song of the Week, but then I laughed and laughed and changed it to month.
The artist I've chosen in this month of February is the lovely Lana Del Rey. I didn't choose her because it's almost Valentines Day* and all her songs are about love.** I chose her because I actually enjoy her music. She seems to be generating quite a lot of hatred towards her though, which kinda makes me like her more, haha. I have her album and listen to 4 songs on repeat: Born To Die, Blue Jeans, Radio and of course, Video Games. I just really like her voice. Granted, she can't really sing live, but neither can many pop stars, so fuck you.***
So without further ado, here is my song of the month:
*call it "V Day" and I'll think "Vagina Day". **this only occurred to me now, I swear. I AM NOT LYING. ***a bit dramatic & crass, but I'm in a ragin' mood so whatevs.
